Booker T Tells the Kettle Its’ Black And Calls Out Ronda Rousey

Pot_calling_the_kettle_black_by_CoelasquidSo when I went to Prowrestling.net, I found a link to this story on Yahoo! Sports that interviewed Booker T about his jail time, helping kids learn English in Singapore and MMA. I found the last topic the most interesting. The delicious irony of Booker T saying

I don’t think the lifespan (of MMA fighters) is very long, and you could get hurt really, really bad doing it…Plus, when it’s over with, where do you go from there?

The day after Adam “Edge” Copeland got the opening segment on WWE’s flagship show Raw, Booker tells us MMA fighters don’t have long careers. Why did Triple H make half a dozen “Stack of dimes neck” references then Book? Because Edge had a long career? Oh no, because he had a short career. I’m sure Steve Austin decided to move along during the height of his popularity because of the huge movie roles that he is landing. That’s right, Austin had to move on because of injuries too. He isn’t landing huge roles either. Austin isn’t doing bad for himself but you don’t hear Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson doing a podcast because he needs some extra change in his couch cushions. I’m also going to guess that Booker thinks that Chris Benoit had a nice long, healthy career.

The second part of the statement shouldn’t go unnoticed either. Booker T, again just last night, was telling Big Show to be professional and not do anything stupid because he needed to support his young daughter and family. If WWE wrestlers are more diversified than your average MMA fighter, shouldn’t you advise Big Show to do what is right because he has a back up career? How about you Booker, what’s your back up career to wrestling? That’s right, it’s being a wrestling personality. And running a wrestling school. It certainly seems like you moved on from wrestling Book. Then he moved on to ripping on Ronda Rousey who

…couldn’t find her way in life and found it through going out and beating other girls up.

So the guy that needed jail time to get straightened out is telling a woman who got into the Olympics at the age of 17 that she couldn’t find her way in life? Who is this guy kidding? Has he even taken as much time as yours truly to read Ronda’s Wikipedia page? Maybe Booker did but I doubt it or else I wouldn’t be able to rip on him. If you get into the Olympics before you can drink alcohol legally, you have found something in life to do. I could care less if it’s beating up people of the same gender. You made a living wearing tights and well, I’ll let him hoist his own petard

Wrestling is Shakespeare. Phantom of the Opera. Romeo and Juliet. That’s what it is – men in tights

At least he laughed after that comment. Hopefully he’ll find a lot of public shaming for some really stupid comments funny too. – Kevin

The Art of Wrestling: #UFC’s Benson Henderson by Dethrone

BensonWings

I don’t have a lot of favorites in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) but Benson Henderson is certainly one of them. I started enjoying his fights when he was in World Elite Cagefighting (WEC). He had a thoroughly entertaining fight with “Cowboy” Donald Cerrone. Ever since then, I’ve followed his career quite closely and looked forward to any event. He fought smartly to soundly defeat Nate Diaz at UFC on Fox 5. Henderson wore a new shirt to the ring. Considering my penchant for reviewing merchandise, I figured this was a good topic.

It was easy to notice that Henderson’s shirt played off of his back tattoo (above for those who are blind) by having an angel wielding a sword. The idea of taking from the fighters tattoos is definitely something that has happened in the WWE with Edge. The feathers on the angel are layered well because of the black and white contrast. The feathers however don’t have a grey tone like Henderson’s tattoo which makes them easier to print but does hold back the depth. The feathers and wings are a perfect show of contrast, if it weren’t for the fact that the background is a dark grey. Even if they lightened it up to a heather grey, it’d be a much better contrast from the image to the background.

The armor is colored a flat gold which keeps a contrast but doesn’t provide much of a pop because of the flatness. The black that helped to provide depth for the feathers, helps to dull the gold even more. They also use it in a heavy handed way on the skirt armor but more sparingly on the other pieces of armor.

The last main part of the shirt is the print at the top of the shirt. I have noted my affinity for Gothic lettering more than once. I think it is a good choice considering that Dethrone is inspired by medieval monarchies. They use white for Dethrone and the flat gold for Royalty Co. It’s a solid and standard use for multiple colors. What I don’t like is the giant black blob underneath the lettering and above the right hand wing. It would have looked less like a blob if the black were trimmed for the background dark grey.

The rear of the shirt just has a stamp for Dethrone and “Smooth” Ben Henderson on it which is nice. Overall, I dig this shirt a lot. Now I hope Henderson can take out his next challenger. -Kevin

#UFConFox Coverage

As noted recently, we’re trying new stuff here on Stunt Granny and we’ll see what sticks and what doesn’t. I have done round by round reviews on Twitter in the past but I’m at home chilling tonight so I’m bringing it to the main part of the site.

Matt Brown vs Mike Zwick

First Round – Brown had Zwick in a number of compromising positions but never quite got him into a major danger zone.

Second Round – Brown caught Zwick with an elbow that put him on the defensive. Brown drops him with a great combo. The left hook did most of the damage. Brown dodged a right just before the KO. WinnerMatt Brown (representing Cbus well, I might add.)

The UFC is certainly giving me plenty of time to catch up with a preview for Cain Velasquez vs Junior Dos Santos II and for the next fight.

Rory McDonald vs BJ Penn

First Round – The size difference is heavily in McDonald’s advantage. BJ is pressing but McDonald is doing a good job of using his length to defend. BJ has some great hands. He’s finding ways to close the distance. A McDonald elbow busts open Penn. McDonald is the aggressor at the end of the round.

Second Round – Nice, McDonald trains with Kris Letang of the Pittsburgh Penguins. I’ve seen some of his work outs and imitated some of the exercises. McDonald is dictating terms. Penn is turtling up. McDonald isn’t going for the kill but is getting in a ton of shots.Joe Rogan is calling it target practice. You couldn’t say it better. Penn gets out of the round but he needs a KO or submission to win this thing.

Third Round – Penn tries to take McDonald down but to no avail. McDonald starts teeing off again.  He’s gotten lazy though since he knows he has the first two rounds in the bag. Winner – (Without hearing the cards) Rory McDonald. No surprise that it’s a unanimous decision. He goes pro wrestling and challenges Carlos Condit to a fight in March.

Maurico “Shogun” Rua vs Alexander Gustafsson

First Round – Rogan reminds us that just because the reach is the same, it doesn’t mean their legs are the same length. Shogun turning a trip into a positive. Rogan & Mike Goldberg thought he got  clipped. I disagree. Easy take down for Gustafsson but he does nothing with it. Shogun does holds down Gustafsson longer but  there isn’t much damage either. Fairly even round.

Second Round – Shogun is slipping in  some good pops with the hands early. He used his legs a lot in the first. Gustafsson had the mount but  gave it up to stand up. Gustafsson with a nice take down. Shogun rolls out quickly. Gustafsson taking over in the striking department. Gustafsson easy in that round.

Third Round – Already glad I taped an extra half an hour. Gustafsson with a take down. Shogun is looking a bit gassed. He gets hurt with a liver kick. Rogan talking about Shogun not being in good enough shape. I agree because he still has a baby gut. Gustafsson should win this round too. WinnerAlexander Gustafsson Unanimous decision
