#SippyTimeBeer Review – @TheAbitaBeer and @SaintArnold

St Arnold Weedwacker

Naturally when I went to New Orleans for Wrestlemania, I drank beers made in Louisiana or in one case Texas since I don’t live there. I have had Abita before since it’s distributed in 46 states. I haven’t seen much of their beer outside of Purple Haze, which I avoided drinking while down there since it is the only Abita I have drunk before. I’ll cover Abita & Saint Arnold (Texas beer) today with the flights of beer at the New Orleans breweries coming next week. I did miss the NOLA Brewery but we only had so much time. Let’s get to the reviews.

Saint Arnold Brewing Co. –  Weedwacker – My lady and I went to Emeril’s for our first meal after getting into New Orleans. I told the staff I wanted a refreshing beer and asked for a hefeweizen. The beverage ended up being from Houston, Texas. I can’t get my hands on stuff from Texas all the time (I’m looking your way Shahid.) so I was fine with drinking it. Saint Arnold has a similar beer called Lawnmower, which is a kolsch, but because they swapped out kolsch yeast for hefeweizen yeast, this beer is a hefeweizen. It did taste a little more hoppy than a normal hefeweizen. In my opinion, kolschs tend to have just a bit more hops even though both styles are low in it. I liked this beer but it didn’t blow me out of the water because of the odd hops tinge which only gets it to 15 IBUs which usually isn’t noticeable but is because of the lightness of the wheat beer. It has a 4.9% ABV so one can drink it for a while. If you want to try it yourself, they are only available in Texas, Louisiana, Colorado & Florida.

Abita StrawberryAbita Brewing Co.Strawberry – This beverage was my follow up beer. I had to start drinking Louisiana beers and what better than drinking the most popular kind. I went with one I had never heard of because it’s their Seasonal Harvest beer. It was a nice and refreshing beer. It is very thin which isn’t too much of a surprise from a lager. Not surprisingly, it has a prominent strawberry flavor. I think Abita does a fantastic job with fruit beers. This beverage has a 4.2% ABV and an IBU of 13. If you like fruity beers, give this one a try as long as it’s available.

Abita Brewing Co.Amber – As anyone who has read the site, they know I love my ambers. I remember my buddy Geoff Towne, brewmaster at Zauber Brewing, that one beer that I love, Eliot Ness, had more malt than a normal Vienna lager. After drinking this Vienna lager, I understand exactly what he means. Eliot Ness has 27 IBU while the Abita has 17 IBU but I swear that the hops is more prominent in the Amber than in Eliot Ness. It is probably because the malt is so much heavier than what is in the Amber. It is still a good beer but to me it isn’t as good as Eliot Ness. More malt is better in Kevin’s mouth. This beer is a year round offering so pick it up unless you’re one of the 4 states that don’t get Abita.

Abita Jockamo IPAAbita Brewing Co.Jockamo IPA – Jeremy, his lady & myself had a crazy drinking night on Saturday while my woman slept off her sickness. Because of a Hand Grenade, one plus Resurrections and a 190 proof shot from Dave the Fireman, who supposedly was in the front row at Wrestlemania, and several beers prior to that, I had a bit of a hang over on Sunday. My headache was still persisting when we went to grab food before going into the now infamous Silver aka Super Dome. At Daisy Duke’s, Jockamo IPA was my beer of choice. When I initially tasted it, I thought there was too much hops in it. As I drank it though, it settled in and started going down much smoother. I think that my hang over was still causing problems for my palate because the IBU was 52 which is quite low for an IPA. This beer is another year round beer so if you’re an IPA fan, drink one of these bad boys.

Abita Andygator

Abita Brewing Co.Andygator – This beer was the last Abita I had. On their site, it’s listed as a big beer but I got a 12 oz. It’s an interesting beer because it’s a Helles Doppelbock. Helles beers are normally lighter, pilsner like beers. Doppelbocks tend to be darker and thicker beers, similar to porters. So it was surprising to see the two words put together. Abita used pale malt, German lager yeast and German Perle hops to come up with this concoction. It provided for an interesting taste that I enjoyed. I’m quite sure I haven’t tasted a Doppelbock like it before. Because it is that style, it comes in at 8.0% ABV and an IBU of 25. This beer is my favorite non-fruit Abita Beer. I believe it is now available everywhere since a friend in Cleveland said she had it in her refrigerator. I saved the best for last, by chance.

Here’s a cool link from Wired.com about a new glass to enjoy your stouts more properly. If you’re a serious stout drink, I think you owe it to #SippyTimeBeer to spend $9 on this excellent item. I will also be going to North High Brewing this weekend with my lady’s father so there’s another article in store on top of more New Orleans beers. Have a good weekend! – Kevin

Weekend Rewind: Hulk Hogan and AJ Lee

AJ-Lee-Skull-n-Bones-Photoshoot-

We’d all rather look at her than Hogan’s leathery mug, right? From WWE.com

Hulk Hogan by way of Jimmy Hart made a desperate attempt at getting on the Wrestlemania card. Hart said

He told me to say exactly this: Hulk Hogan will be at WrestleMania if he has to buy a ticket and sit at ringside

I’m going to guess that Hulk won’t be seated next to us in section 306. How much would that jump the value of your seats if he did announce his seat location? It might make floor level seats worth it. That wasn’t the most entertaining part of Hart’s diatribe.

I think he can step into the ring one more time. We have a school in Florida, and he stepped into the ring there and did some stuff, and he looked great. As his friend, I’d be the first one to say, ‘Listen Hulk, do us a favor, just go out to the ring to Real American, say OK Brother, rip the shirt, do the pose, sign a bunch of autographs and people will still be just as happy,’ … but he does have a couple of good matches left in him, he really does. I’ve got my fingers crossed we see something at WrestleMania.

If your seat value rose with Hulk sitting next to you, it would drop if Hogan wrestled. It’d be a train wreck. I don’t want to see him wrestle anyone. He’s past time of having a clash of the titans with John Cena or even the Undertaker. HHH could be a target too but I’m pretty sure even the Game knows the match quality wouldn’t be there.

That news wasn’t the last on the weekend involving Hulk Hogan. He was on a show on the Oprah Winfrey Network called “Where Are They Now?” I’m guessing that doesn’t make TNA feel all that great because if they were somewhere, Oprah wouldn’t have to find Hogan. He was on a show with Carrot Top and Chris Judd. Well, at least TNA has some good company.

Last but not least, A.J. Lee had a fainting spell on the European Tour during a match with Brie Bella due to dehydration. She is reported to be fine which is good news. I’m disappointed that Tamina didn’t give her enough coconut water. Tamina knows that “Rowdy” Roddy Piper helped keep her father Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka hydrated with a coconut to the head. AJ couldn’t have need that much hydration for those two minute long women’s matches so I’m sure a coconut would have done the trick. – Kevin

The Art of Wrestling – Adam Cole

corona_labelIt’s really easy to make fun of ROH so I’m going to do that while also highlighting one of their successes, Adam Cole and his t shirt. The part that I’ll make fun of is their website. We’re still a layout or two old in as far as a blog goes but then again we’re not owned by a broadcasting company. The page I came on to look at shirts is laid out like this which looks well enough because there’s only so many ways to list a bevy of items. The problem I have with it though is that the product that you are selling is the smallest item on the page. It should fill from break line to break line. If the wrestler is there to endorse their product, they should be wearing it. Why does ROH make the easiest jobs hard?

I like Adam Cole. He’s one of few people that would get me to come to an ROH event. It’s no surprise to me then that he has the best shirt in the company. He also follows a pattern that I’ve liked before, ripping off an iconic label and re-purposing it for his own means. In Cole’s case, he co-opted the Corona label and turned it into his shirt. To start at the basics, they use the same colors. Any good rip off has to at least follow the light and dark pattern that they evoke. The next part of the brand re-purposing is using the same text style as the original. In this case, Gothic lettering is used to say “Adam Cole”. To fill in the space below that, ROH put “Est. 2008”.

The crown is still used above the circle that bleeds into the yellow top of the image. The words “La Cerveza Mas Fina” means the “Finest Beer” at least according to Yahoo! Answers. Which is why I have a minor problem with this shirt. Instead of saying “The Finest Wrestler”, they put in “Key De Florida ROH” You have to brand your shirt but that’s a terrible place to put it. As far as I can tell, the back of the shirt doesn’t have anything on it so the ROH label should be there. Considering that Panama City isn’t in the Florida Keys, in fact is on the panhandle, they shouldn’t be using the word Key at all. This problem doesn’t wreck the shirt though. I just think it’s a missed opportunity.

The bottom portion of the shirt changes things up in a good way. Instead of the griffins flanking the button, they are using Palm Trees. It makes sense although one would think to stay in the creature motif and one that would invoke a tougher image that they could use alligator heads. Below that is more text “Imported From Panama City”. Considering that from time to time, ROH makes it still sound like it’s the territory days he could be “imported” from the same country. They have already used “established” though so you can’t reuse it. I don’t have a good solution except to eliminate it above, go with just the year and then use it below to make more sense.

Both of the problems with this shirt are minor. It should be mentioned again that there is nothing on the back of the shirt which makes this a wearable in public t shirt. Find a Sippy Time Beer, find a beach and export the money from your wallet for this shirt because ROH did something right. – Kevin

Interview with Nancy Benoit’s sister

300x300

I found this on The2count.com.  I find her to be very well spoken. – Dusty

He did seem to love Nancy very dearly. We know that, unfortunately, their relationship started to get rocky at some point. When did you first get wind that things were turning complicated between them?

I lived in Atlanta and my sister asked me home almost every one of my days off. I want to be clear: Chris was not an abusive husband. But there were, what we call in the industry, though don’t often talk about, “high spots”. She had been there, in that position before, and refused to put up with it at all, especially with Daniel in their home. So I went with her after one of these “incidents” to file an order of protection.

What do you mean by “high spots”?

Yelling, screaming, name calling, shoving, pushing, breaking stuff.

Did Nancy ever mention anything about fearing for her or Daniel’s safety?

Yes, when she first filed for divorce.

In 2003, Nancy filed for divorce citing cruel treatment and an irrevocably broken marriage. She also filed a restraining order against Chris. She later dropped the proceedings as well as the restraining order. Why did she do that?

Because, like with any marriage where there are issues, they made up and wanted to reconcile, especially for Daniel.

It was reported that Daniel suffered from Fragile X syndrome and that he was being given human growth hormones. Was Daniel’s health an issue in Nancy and Chris’ disagreements?

Daniel did not have Fragile X. I have his medical records. He was NOT sick.

Hulk Hogan = Guy Fieri?

Modern-Buckhead

According to Prowrestling.net (by way of Tampabay.com which has way more information) Hulk Hogan opened up a restaurant on New Year’s Eve in the city of Tampa. Hogan’s Beach started with a masquerade party since Hogan was clearly inspired by Eyes Wide Shut with his the outing of his sex tape. Considering that this complex is 20,000 square foot, he’ll have plenty of spaces to record his sexual exploits without someone squeezing him for money. This place is should be just as classy as the one Tom Cruise attended because there will be a mechanical shark you can ride and a white sand beach. I’m sure Hulk will oil down Brooke’s ass on the beach again but this time while Bully Ray looks on in approval. Hogan has 360 seats in this restaurant. Each of the seats is covered in leather tanned just to the right shade of Hogan’s skin so that it can be properly branded. He has already pitched a reality show based on his restaurant to CMT. I’m sure that’ll be a great way to keep your bare ass off of TV while you’re pounded the hot waitress that looks like a man just like your ex-wife and current wife. -Kevin

The Art of Wrestling: ROH Newswire

Eric sent me the ROH Newswire email that he gets and asked whether I’d review these shirts. That’s like the wife asking Eric to stay off Stunt Granny. Or Jeremy being told to watch the latest freak show on TLC. Or Dusty being told Jim Cornette was signing autographs in Fond-du-Lac for free. Of course I’ll do it.

I love the advertisement in the middle of this add which screams “We’re high quality” by announcing that their shirts are only $10 this weekend. In comparison, you need to look at the prices at TNA (A majority of shirts are $19,99 with a high of $24.99) and the WWE (A majority of shirts are $24.99 with a high of $30.99). I’m not going to buy t-shirts from all three companies to compare their quality. I do feel like TNA & the WWE could bring their price down but I’m sure their shirts are of better quality than those from ROH. They could have put a nice spin on it by saying it’s a special for their ten year anniversary all year long.

The next part of this advertisement that bellows “We’re high quality” is by advertising their biggest stars which naturally means they’ve got two ROH shirts that are more generic than anything TNA or the WWE produces. The least they could do is add a hand shake silhouette in the background or even use a modified medal of honor. I don’t quite understand the logo either. The lengthened O underlines the other letters but it doesn’t really do much for the design. It adds flags to the top of R and H but not to the bottom so they didn’t keep the theme going. The O is also another spot that they could use the medal of honor.

The US Medal of Honor

To move on with the star content, they decided that Roderick Strong, The World’s Greatest Tag Team, Jay Lethal and Eddie Edwards should represent them. The only shirt with anyone’s name is Camp Strong which is just a tad ironic. One of my favorite moments on #WatchROH recently is when Nigel McGuinness explained that Strong concentrates on cardio conditioning. Why does the guy have a gut then at 180? Camp Strong needs a new head trainer. The barbell has beers on the end of it to make it a hilarious shirt. Oh, that isn’t funny?  Austin pulled off the beer drinking gimmick. James Storm pulls off the beer drinking gimmick. A little imp can’t pull it off.

Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas have the most boring shirt of them all. Black shirt with grey print and a script below it explaining the acronym. They should have used white to help make the contrast more bold but even that wouldn’t have saved this boring shirt. Jay Lethal and Eddie Edwards shirts are better with the contrasts but the designs are left lacking too. One could argue that the Lethal Injection looks like a syringe but I think they could go more in that direction to make it look more realistic. Instead, it’s a lazy lined fade pattern. WGTT & Lethal’s shirts have something in common that Edwards’s shirt doesn’t, the first two are centered and symmetrical, while Edwards has a lop sided design. As I’ve noted previous Art of Wrestling columns, lop sided is not necessarily bad. In this case though, there’s nothing to offset the design in the lower right hand side of the shirt so it’s bad.

The one last thing I will note about all of these shirts is that none of them are Ring of Honor’s champions. Not the ROH World Champion Kevin Steen. Not the TV Champion Adam Cole. Not their Tag Team Champions in Steve Corino & Jimmy Jacobs. The later two don’t even have a shirt so no link. The first two aren’t any better in quality but they should be pushed more because they’re the top names in the company. ROH is a third rate company. Their t shirts only help to prove it even more than their TV product. -Kevin

Hulk Hogan helps lung transplant patient enjoy multiple days of his Hulkamania-blessed life

Just teasing, Hulk Hogan loves his fans.

(Update, 8/31: Wow, somehow this post has leapt in “popularity” in the past 12 hours. I invite everyone to read the comments that have already been posted before you recommend I commit suicide in front of a video camera. I don’t need to be told twice! Also, I understand Hogan actually met with the Hafeleins, which surprises me given Hogan’s busy schedule of telling everyone he was Lars Ulrich’s first choice as Metallica’s bassist. Congratulations to the Hafeleins, and kudos for your courage.)

According to Prowrestling.net, Hulk Hogan is helping pro wrestling fan Jason Hafelein of Midland, Michigan, cross one particular item off his bucket list: to meet the Hulkster in person. Hafelein recently underwent a double lung transplant, which his body is rejecting, and since he can’t fly due to the air pressure, he, his wife, and his respiratory therapist plan to drive from Michigan to meet Hogan. Please watch the video of his story here: http://www.redlasso.com/?p=467504
