#SippyTimeBeer Review – @FoundersBrewing, @JackieOsBrewery and @KonaBrewingCo

Founders Breakfast StoutFounders Brewing CompanyBreakfast Stout – This beer comes from what is becoming one of my favorite breweries. They are located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This beer is seasonal so I must have grabbed it when it first came in October. It runs through February. It is not a cheap beer which is why I took my time to enjoy this beer. It is the best oatmeal stout I have ever had. It’s thick, it’s got some bitter coffee notes along with the usual offsetting chocolate and enough oats to make you think you’ve had breakfast. Much like the child on their label, this beer is so good I could have it for breakfast. It’d be perfect on Cap’N Crunch. They have a handy dandy tool on the website that you can punch in your zip code and find out if it’s sold in your area. If you like stouts, buy it. It’s worth every last penny.

Jackie O’s BreweryFirefly Amber – This brewery is out of Athens, OH and doesn’t have a large distribution area but because I’ve been told it’s a great brewery, I keep trying their beers. Amber Ales are usually my favorite but this one was just okay. Their own description calls this a gateway beer to drinking craft beers which might be my problem with it. I like more malt in my ambers than they provide since I enjoy Eliot Ness so much from Great Lakes Brewing s that’s another strike against it. The beer is worth grabbing on a night out but I wouldn’t buy a six pack again.

Kona Brewing CompanyWailua Wheat – This beer could be called a summer beer. Considering that I drank it three months ago, it was summer. If Jackie O’s was trying for a perfect craft beer to introduce to new drinkers, Kona nailed it. Wailua Wheat is like your average Bud Light, Miller Lite or Coors Light except with taste. It’s fresh and crisp. Kona adds passion fruit to add a citrus note to the beverage but I didn’t taste that very much. This beer is an excellent choice if you don’t want a heavy beer. Luckily, Kona is distributed in quite a few states so go out and grab some for yourself.

If you do like beers, you’ve probably got at least a couple of growlers sitting around. I have five myself. In case you were wondering how to properly clean them, here’s a helpful video. Remember to hop on Instagram, follow me @difrango11 and hash tag #SippyTimeBeer. – Kevin

Stunt Granny Sports Show #5

130317230217-tx-madness-t1-wideWell we ended up taking the week off after all but we are back, albeit a day or two late, with another edition of The Stunt Granny Sports Show. This week Eric2 and Jeremy break down the obvious story of the NCAA tournament selections. How do they feel their respective favorites will do and how far can they actually get this year? Is it fair that a team like Liberty that lost twenty, yes twenty, games make the tournament? What is the point of having a play in game for an 11 seed? How the hell do you acquire three technical fouls and lose a tournament game when things are seemingly in hand? They also go back to the well and talk about a total halftime failure for one lucky basketball contestant. The NHL has finally done pulled the trigger and has agreed to realignment. Do the new conferences make sense? How about the playoff format? How did they draw up the geographic lines? Really; Florida and Detroit are in the same division? They then decide to argue the difference between play fighting, slap fighting and boxing glove dexterity. Obviously they discuss more but this is just a preview after all.  In order to get it all you simply need to download the show and listen.

Abita Brew Kettle Founders

Abita Brewing CompanySatsuma Harvest Wit – I learned what a satsuma is this weekend.  It’s the name for a tangerine since it was originally from the Satsuma province of Japan. The good folks from Abita Springs, LA got a hold of them for a very refreshing beer. I’m not one for summer shandies because I think they get heavy handed in the fruit department. This beer left just enough orange flavor on my palate. It was a nice change after drinking a rye beer, which I won’t review today. Abita makes good products so go out there and hunt this one down.

The Brew KettleLake BeErie – This beer is from Strongsville, OH which is west of my old stomping grounds at Kent. As far as I can tell, the distribution is just in Ohio and specifically for their Taproom and Brewhouse. This beer has confirmed something that I’ve been thinking since starting these reviews, I’m not a big pilsner fan. They’re just there. It’s hard to describe something that goes in and out almost as smoothly as water. I’m not the biggest fan of “cute” names especially when you look at the map and still see a solid 30-45 minute drive from Strongsville to Lake Erie. For a pilsner, I’d pick this one over the Victory Prima Pils though.

Founders Brewing CompanyPorter – It’s billed as dark, rich and sexy. I can agree on the first two parts. The last part might happen if you have enough of them at the bar and you strap on your beer goggles. This porter is dark and rich enough to drink like a stout. They say there’s chocolate and caramel (also called crystal) malt. I didn’t taste much of the chocolate but I did taste the toffee flavor which to me is more like a coffee flavor. Here’s TheFullPint review. They’re out of Grand Rapids, MI and have a find it search for their products in your area. There isn’t anything too fancy to this porter and that makes it just right to drink, hopefully in your area. -Kevin

Clutch finally releases a finished version of Earth Rocker. Joy abounds.

If you listen to any of our Podcasts going back to the ProWrestling Torch days you will know I have a very few loves in this long life. In no particular order they are Michigan sports, movies, G.I. Joe and Beer. There is however one love that far surpasses anything else and no it isn’t family. I mean it should be but whatever.  This love is my absolute obsession with the band, cough, excuse me, the world’s greatest band Clutch.

2009’s “Strange Cousins from the West” release is a solid album and it is one I listen to over and over but it was absent the slick grooves and riffs of its predecessors. Then again with a catalog of nothing but greatness if your one slip is a B instead of solid A’s you take the punches. Judging by the first single released on the interwebs yesterday it seems that they are right back on the A+ wagon.

Brooklyn Vegan has an interview with Tim Sult, lead guitarist for Clutch, and in the middle of the interview is the solid gold drop. After countless youtube live videos taken with a phone and hearing the new material live Clutch fans finally get the studio version of “Earth Rocker” and, well you get the point already, it doesn’t disappoint.

The new album “Earth Rocker” comes courtesy of Clutch and the producer of their two greatest releases “Pure Rock Fury” and “Blast Tyrant”, Machine.  “Pure Rock Fury” being what I like to refer to as a dirty album while “Blast Tyrant” is just a masterpiece of craftsmanship. So with expectations really unreasonably high I can, without an ounce of shame, admit that this song gave me chills and even made me tear up a bit.

The slow build of Tim Sults’ guitar, Dan Maines’ bass and Jean-Paul Gasters’ crisp cymbal taps immediately grab your attention and leave no mistake what band you are listening to. When Neil Fallon’s vocals take over, literally his voice sounds much more upfront than the music; you are on a three minute and thirty one second joyride. So sit back, listen to this over and over until March 12. It is what I have been doing since yesterday. -Jeremy

Birra MorettiPremium Lager – The first time I had this beer, I was just starting my studies in Florence, Italy. One of my goals when I went there was to try over one hundred beers. I surpassed my goal but no thanks to the efforts of some of my kin. Moretti is the Budweiser (not the Czech kind) of Italy. It goes down and comes out with no special flavor. I wasn’t paying for this because it was at my office Christmas party. I wouldn’t go out of my way to order this beer, no matter what Italian restuarant you frequent. Order Chianti. You’re welcome.

Bell’s BreweryWinter White Ale – I went to see my friends’ band Australosurfecus on Thursday night at Byrne’s Pub. My window for tasting winter beers is closing with the New Year around the bend. This beer was a mix of the expected from a winter beer (clove) with a twist (the white ale). I really like the crispness that comes from white ales. Bell’s also drops hints of fruits (I think orange and lemon) to help freshen up the beer. It makes it taste more like a refreshing summer beer. If you live in these areas, you can taste this tasty beverage from Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Never forget to check out TheFullPint to see if they agree with my palate about Moretti or Winter White Ale. -Kevin

Amy Weber Nude, Iowa vs Michigan, Knee Injury & Hurricane Sandy Aftermath

I couldn’t find the real deal so I borrowed from TMZ permanently.

According to TMZ, Amy Weber has released nude photos because her lap top was stolen. They were from a Playboy shoot that never made it into the sticky pages under my mattress. You might remember her from her role in JBL’s Cabinet. I had to look it up on Wikipedia to make sure one of my Sippy Time Beers hadn’t dislodged a memory of an average WWE Diva.

According to Derrick Bateman’s Twitter (by way of Prowrestling.net) he is out for an undisclosed amount of time because of another knee surgery. I bring him up because he was signed away from then Pro Wrestling Ohio about five years ago. I haven’t seen him much so I won’t critique his work but isn’t five years enough to know if a guy will cut it or not in the WWE? I know it takes a while to learn the ropes but the time frame seems like plenty. If only the WWE had enough TV time to find a spot for him when he got healthy.

Master thief Joel Luke pleaded guilty to fifth degree theft for swiping the TNA Title and thus bringing great shame to the state of Iowa. He will get two years of probation. If only he could have waited for TNA’s next trip through the state for such an opportunity. He could have stolen the new Jeff Hardy Belt and done all wrestling fans around the country a favor. Yes, even those fans that clearly spend money only on Munchos and Cheez Whiz with backpacks full of Faygo but still have enough government assistance left over to drive to Orlando from Michigan just to see that garbage company.

For those of you concerned about your Friday viewing habits because of NBC’s coverage of a Superstorm Sandy benefit concert, don’t worry, be happy. As of now, you can watch replays of one third of Raw and an hour of Smackdown starting at it’s regularly scheduled 8 PM time slot. -Kevin

Hulk Hogan helps lung transplant patient enjoy multiple days of his Hulkamania-blessed life

Just teasing, Hulk Hogan loves his fans.

(Update, 8/31: Wow, somehow this post has leapt in “popularity” in the past 12 hours. I invite everyone to read the comments that have already been posted before you recommend I commit suicide in front of a video camera. I don’t need to be told twice! Also, I understand Hogan actually met with the Hafeleins, which surprises me given Hogan’s busy schedule of telling everyone he was Lars Ulrich’s first choice as Metallica’s bassist. Congratulations to the Hafeleins, and kudos for your courage.)

According to Prowrestling.net, Hulk Hogan is helping pro wrestling fan Jason Hafelein of Midland, Michigan, cross one particular item off his bucket list: to meet the Hulkster in person. Hafelein recently underwent a double lung transplant, which his body is rejecting, and since he can’t fly due to the air pressure, he, his wife, and his respiratory therapist plan to drive from Michigan to meet Hogan. Please watch the video of his story here: http://www.redlasso.com/?p=467504
