56 Days of WrestleMania – WrestleMania 2’s Best Matches

We’re counting down the days until WrestleMania 29 by selecting the 56 best matches in WrestleMania history! (Wow, that sounds ridiculous now that I type it out. Our methodology is also completely unfair, selecting the best two matches from every WM when we know full well that the entire WM17 card was better than the entire WM2 card. Nonetheless…) Today, it’s WrestleMania 2, with 12 contenders. And two pretty logical winners. I mean, Moolah vs. McIntyre is the stuff wrestling textbooks are made of. Let us know what you think and vote now! Results tomorrow!

globulus

You ever wonder what a year in review show sounds like when the year sucked badly? Is this the worst year ever for wrestling? What does the NFL have to do with it anyway? Why the hell do you fire a coach that goes 10-6 in the regular season? Does the head coach of a team really even matter? Was WrestleMania 11 the worst ever or has it been replaced by this years tepid effort? What the hell was that Christmas edition of RAW? Do children even find that moronic crap entertaining? There is more, oh boy there is more so download and check it out.

TNA is finally profitable on pay-per-views

It took a little help, but they got finally got there! Quote:

Earlier this year the U.S. authorities arrested Yonjo Quiroa of Comstock Park on suspicion of operating several websites that linked to unauthorized sports streams. Following his arrest, Quiroa was detained for more than nine months, and he has now been sentenced to time already served plus deportation to his home country. In addition the site admin has to pay restitution to five major sports leagues, totaling $13,000.

Under the flag of Operation Fake Sweep, the Department of Justice and Homeland Security’s ICE unit seized several domains belonging to major sports streaming sites in February.

In addition to pulling these sites offline the feds also arrested 28-year-old Yonjo Quiroa of Comstock Park, Michigan. Quiroa was apprehended for allegedly operating nine of the seized domains and was jailed pending trial.

The sites in question, including hq-streams.tv, sportswwe.com and sports95.com, did not host any infringing files but listed hyperlinks to streams offered by popular third-party services such as Justin.tv.

In the criminal complaint an ICE officer states that through these links he was able to access unauthorized streams of NBA, NHL and WWE events. The complaint further noted that during 2010 and 2011 Quiroa grossed $13,000 by running advertisements on his sites.

In the months following his arrest Quiroa was held in custody without bail. In August he avoided trial by entering a guilty plea for a copyright misdemeanor on the understanding that he would receive a sentence of between 6 and 12 months.

After nine months in custody Quiroa was sentenced late last week.

District Court Judge Robert Ellis sentenced the former site admin to time served for one count of criminal copyright infringement. In addition, it was ordered that Quiroa should be deported to his home country after paying $25 in criminal penalties.

The largest monetary penalty, however, comes from the restitution he has to pay to several sports leagues. The $13,000 Quiroa earned in revenue was counted as losses to the sports majors so the NBA, NFL, NHL, WWE and TNA will each get $2,600.

Losses and restitution

The verdict is the first against the operator of a sports streaming link site in the United States and sets the bar for similar cases in the future.

This includes the pending case of Brian McCarthy, the owner of Texas-based sports streaming site Channelsurfing.net, who was arrested Match 2011.

The sentencing for a lesser misdemeanor crime also raises questions about the looming extradition of UK student Richard O’Dwyer. The U.S. wants to extradite O’Dwyer for his involvement in TVShack, a site linking to TV steams.

The Department of Justice has yet to comment on the outcome of the current case. Interestingly no press release was sent out, unlike in February when the arrest of Quiroa was widely distributed over the news wire. – Dusty

Kevin’s Blog: Almost Live, Definitely Half Assed Review of @WWE #Raw

I had to lead off with one of the more ridiculous things my room mate has ever said to my girlfriend. Really, he has a whole lot of those but this one happened on Saturday. We were getting ready to go see Jim Norton over at the Funny Bone so I was making some pasta and tomato sauce. If anyone has read this column before, you know it’s a regular practice. As the sauce was cooking, I went up to take a shower leaving her down here to keep things in order. Roomie shows up plowed out of his mind (thanks to his brother in law. The one attached to the baby momma and the only reason he’s living in my basement. We’ll get to that insanity some other time.) and tells my girl that he taught me everything I knew about wine. Evidently he invited me over to his place to take informal classes and was taught how to pick my wines. He then decided to give the tomato sauce a little stir and told her “It wasn’t thick enough.” I was told this while we drove to the Funny Bone and I had quite a hearty laugh. I didn’t ever go over to his place for wine classes. I got most of my wine knowledge when I lived near Tuscan vineyards. We actually had a class on it while I was studying in Florence. As for his critique of my tomato sauce, he was correct but that’s only because it hadn’t cooked the proper length of time yet. What a dolt. Let’s roll.

Two referees in two weeks. What the hell is going on in Vince’s world? Is he that stuck on the NFL’s terrible referees? After a brow beating by CM Punk, Paul Heyman does it too. Vince is stuck on the NFL. Their ratings aren’t in the toilet. My girl doesn’t think the short shorts are GM leg wear. I beg to differ. AJ Lee sends him the ref to the back. I am pretty tired of the employees running things in wrestling. Punk re-shows the video of AJ proposing to him. Punk is being a real creep. That’s a good thing. Paul, you’re not going to trump any of those power couples. Just knock it off. Does the board not watch when sexual harassment is going on?

We get more referee TV time. The WWE keeps forgetting how many wrestlers they have on the roster. AJ promises to fire him while looking out into space. I like her acting but still don’t care for the story line of “Let’s fire every GM every show.” We have a Twitter fight turned into a wrestling match. Dolph Ziggler is taking on Kofi Kingston who is apparently still in a tag team since R Truth comes to the ring with him. Can’t someone take this loss to Ziggler that isn’t in a big tag team? From the tweets, it looks as made up as any bad WWE story. All story, little match before the break.

I want to break my lap top when Criss Angel weighs in on Lil’ Jimmy. Kofi is not helping out the quality of the match. Ziggler seems to be a little out of place on some of these moves too. Kofi is one of the few guys who could get the rise out of the crowd that he did since it’s believable he could win. Zig Zag for the win after a couple of near falls. Jim Ross & Mitchell Cool tell us about John Cena‘s injury. He’s going to give us a live update.

Kevin’s Blog: Almost Live, Definitely Half Assed Review of Raw

This image came up when I typed in "Oh shit". Who am I to argue?

I typed in “Oh shit” because the Penguins are going to a game seven on Wednesday. Time to do or go home. I can’t say I expected much out of them without Sidney Crosby & Geno Malkin but damn it, I want this first round. I’m almost debating driving there. As the Pensblog will undoubtedly say “Time to sac up.”

Well, actually time to draft up. We start with a battle royal. My buddy Sean as he’s going out the door says “That’s gay.” Couldn’t agree more. By the way, couldn’t be less excited about the NFL draft this weekend. This one doesn’t hold much weight for me either. People are getting eliminated left and right. Why did Mark Henry eliminate himself basically to eliminate Clay? The announcer draft factoids are more mundane than any stat Todd McShay can come up with. We hit a commercial.

Big Show & Kofi for SD take on Mason Ryan & Evan Bourne. This could help Bourne out if he survives. He’s been on a losing streak. Of course Bourne does the worst possible thing, jumping into Big Show’s arms. Mason Ryan loses in a valiant effort, I suppose. He lost a lot of momentum when he got punted. Stupidest draft ever. Cena to Smackdown. I like it. It was him or Orton. He has a history with the Smackdown brand. Cole acting upset is hilarious in a bad way.

Remember! No TNA Impact Tonight

Lobster Dog is unmoved.

Bad news if you are eager to watch some wrestling tonight; Impact isn’t on and it isn’t Friday. Yup, Spike TV has deemed the NFL and ESPN College Football too big to put little old Impact on tonight, At least that has to be the reasoning, right?

Impact and especially TNA rank so high on Spike’s importance scale that reruns of “Gangland” bumped it. They removed Impact for repeats even though TNA is coming off of a PPV. So, this clearly kills all of the credibility of Dixie Carter. You know, the chick who runs or owns or cameos or bigfoots or whatevers Impact and TNA. She constantly spews about how Spike loves TNA and blah blah blah and then they get treated like an episode of “The John Henson Show.” You remember that right? That’s what I thought.

So to make up for the fact that their only show got bumped for reruns, they are putting on a web show of…….wait for it……. a live Q&A with Dixie Carter. Yes, instead of taping some matches or putting on a best-of show or interviewing wrestlers or getting over angles, they are having a question and answerzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

This bitch is everywhere now. Remember when she wasn’t on TV? Well, Impact still sucked but she wasn’t on so I am not sure what my point is here. Anyway, I have a suggestion for Dixie Carter that will make this web show at least passable and it involves her being naked and her playing with her vagina. There, that I would tune in to for about three to five minutes.  -Jeremy

CNN.com reports Chris Nowinski’s findings, he can kiss WWE HoF goodbye!

This is your brain... this is your brain on TGI FRIDAYS! WOOOOO!

"This is your brain... this is your brain on TGI FRIDAYS! WOOOOO!"

CNN.com today has a feature-length story about the long-term damage to the brains of athletes who have suffered concussions. The findings come from the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTSE), which receives and studies dead athletes’ brains solicited by the Sports Legacy Institute, started by former WWE wrestler and “Tough Enough” contestant Chris Nowinski and Dr. Robert Cantu (their last names sound like an argument). The story quotes Nowinski’s inspiration for starting the foundation:

In one moment, his dreams of a long career wrestling were dashed by a kick to his chin. That kick, which caused Nowinski to black out and effectively ended his career, capped a career riddled with concussions.

“My world changed,” said Nowinski. “I had depression. I had memory problems. My head hurt for five years.”

Nowinski began searching for studies, and what he found startled him.

“I realized when I was visiting a lot of doctors, they weren’t giving me very good answers about what was wrong with my head,” said Nowinski. “I read [every study I could find] and I realized there was a ton of evidence showing concussions lead to depression, and multiple concussion can lead to Alzheimer’s.”

The story also says five out of five brains studied by CTSE show the damaging effects (known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE) of multiple concussions (a two-photo slide show is available on this page and, yuck, that beat-up brain is in bad shape), and that “the [protein] tangles [in the damaged brains] closely resemble what might be found in the brain of an 80-year-old with dementia.” No wonder Chris Benoit killed his wife and kid Sophia on “The Golden Girls” was always angry.

According to the article, the NFL’s official statement (*yawn*) says “Hundreds of thousands of people have played football and other sports without experiencing any problem of this type and there continues to be considerable debate within the medical community on the precise long-term effects of concussions and how they relate to other risk factors.” I’m sure Vince McMahon’s reaction to the findings will be slightly less diplomatic, knocking papers out of everyone’s hands and then shouting, “Now ask me a question! Huh? Huh? Awww, you gonna cry?” -Eric
