Sideshow Freaks: Human Oddities by Travis Haight Photography by way of DeviantArt.com

Kevin is back to talk wrestling, this time with our Main Event & NXT expert Chris Calamita. Kevin attended the Main Event tapings that were prior to Smackdown. What epic tag team match started off the tapings? Was it even on the tapings? They move along to someone who is definitely on the show, Seth Rolllins. He got to announce a Money In The Bank contract match. Is this a good idea since they have another ladder match on the card for the WWE Title? How much time did Chris & Kevin spend on Rusev? In the Funkadactyls break up angle, why does Chris think Naomi is unlikeable? Why does Kevin think Cameron is unlikable? How is Paige connecting with the live crowd? If there’s a good match for the main event of Main Event, will anyone care? Will they make a bigger deal out of Goldust & Stardust showing up for a dark match against Rybaxel? Chris & Kevin move on to the spoilers from the Smackdown taping. What traditional angle for the WWE Title was followed by a brawl to start off the show? Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose both get mic time. Who is getting the better of the exchange? Who has a better new look now that Rollins changed his in ring gear for Smackdown? Did Dolph Ziggler get some Bad News in his match with Wade Barrett? Ambrose wrestled Kane at the top of the hour. How many times did interference happen in all of these taped matches? As I said on Twitter “We all know ADR took the pin but who got the pin & biggest reaction of the night. spoilers?” Chris requested he get some time to address his least favorite person on the roster right now. Does Kevin agree with him? Click on the link below to find out the answers to these questions and more!

Uh Oh, It Is @WWE Release Day.

game-of-thrones

Spoiler alert!

It is axe day for WWE as six World Wrestling Entertainment competitors found out.  Apparently once you are released you are no longer classified as a superstar, you are now a competitor; interesting. (UPDATE: This has been changed to Superstars on wwe.com) Using updates from WWE.com and Prowrestling.net, WWE has parted ways with Brodus Clay, Teddy Long, Camacho, Evan Bourne, Curt Hawkins, Aksana and Yoshi Tatsu.  Without reading the headline I hit up Kevin and made a guess. I named Yoshi, Aksana and Curt Hawkins the rest couldn’t have been more wrong. The fact I was having a hard time remembering most of the lower tier talent goes along with the non-surprise involved in these releases.

When you name the title of your post “Six notable talent cuts” shouldn’t at least one of the names be considered notable? Teddy Long hasn’t been on TV in quite a while and I believe Shahid and I discussed his whereabouts not too long ago. Teddy isn’t what you would be considered a young man so this could be a mutual decision. Regardless it is in WWE’s best interest ad they have a glut of authoritative characters on their programming despite the recent on air firings and changes.

Brodus Clay is a stumper, not for the fact he has been released but the very fact he made the most of a dumb gimmick and made money out of it. Wouldn’t WWE be interested in keeping someone with that sort of talent? The Funkasaurus gimmick was perfect for the kids. It was goofy enough that the usually sullen and angry internet audiences eventually came around due to his catch phrases and Naomi’s ass.

Naomi

pop-break.com

The more the character got over the less he appeared on television. He then went through a terrible heel turn and disappeared. He made a final appearance in NXT and that was it. Poof, gone. The argument can be made that he should have been used as a bad ass monster and it will be valid. A confusing career in WWE though is over for now with potential still remaining.

Here is the mean part of this all; Camacho, Evan Bourne, Curt Hawkins and Yoshi Tatsu; farewell. As a fan they never connected. As a business none of them fit above the jobber position outside of Evan Bourne. They were all bland outside of Evan Bourne who wouldn’t stop smoking pot and then repeatedly was injured. He had profitable look and gimmick and it was all for nothing.  Yoshi Tatsu may have been good in the ring but as history dictates, without a mouthpiece a foreign wrestler does not go far. Fair or not that is how WWE conducts business.

Poor, poor Aksana she deserved much better.  After her Monday night it seemed like there was something up. She seemed genuinely surprised by what happened. Maybe she is that good of an actress or maybe it was a rib on her. Regardless she was a barely utilized talent as well. I will miss her even if she was but a whisper on WWE programming. She had a different look than the other Divas. She had a feminine if muscular look and those eyes. Oh those eyes.

Apparently more cuts are coming. Sheesh, this hasn’t happened in a while.   -Jeremy

Class Is In Session: #NXT Review

Because music video premieres are so big today. From Redbullrecords.com

Because music video premieres are so big today. From Redbullrecords.com

The show opens with a recap of last week’s must see NXT Takeover event.

Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton, and William Regal welcome us to the show.

Eden Stiles announces that Tyler Breeze has entered the building.

Mojo Rawley vs. Aiden English

I said last week that Mojo does nothing for me and tonight he did even less. There is just nothing about him that stands out to me. Well nothing good anyway. Aiden English has a great voice for high school theater. That’s about all there is to say about him really. One of the many things that bugs me about Rawley is that his offense consists of other people’s signature moves. He used a Stinger Slash in the middle of the match. He was cut off shortly after that and English took over with the most basic offense known to man. For all of the successes of the NXT program, they’re also pumping out a number of talents who are just an entrance and English certainly fits that bill. Rawley makes his comeback and finishes English with Naomi’s Rear View followed by an Earthquake Splash for the win. He doesn’t have the ass for either by the way. Match was there.

Recap of the aftermath of Tyson Kidd’s failed attempt to win the NXT Championship from Adrian Neville last week.

Devin Taylor interviewed Natalya about her husband’s lack of sportsmanship after the match and she defended his actions.

Charlotte w/ Sasha Banks vs. Bayley

Decent back-and-forth match between these two. I know I rail against most of the goofy gimmicks so I’m going to come off like a hypocrite here but I like Bayley’s act a lot. I think she has done a great job getting tougher while still keeping her innocent persona. This match was not the greatest showcase for Charlotte but just the fact that so young into her career she can have a match with zero mistakes is impressive. The finish came when Summer Rae made her return which actually distracted BFF stablemate Charlotte long enough that she was almost pinned by Bayley on a roll-up. Charlotte was able to use her gymnast skills to roll out of it,kick Bayley in the knees, and hit Bow Down to the Queen for the win.

After the match Summer got into the ring with Charlotte and Sasha and after an awkward stare down she began kicking away at Bayley. Charlotte and Sasha joined in despite not looking like they are not happy to see Summer back at all. Paige and Emma run down for the save as I wonder why exactly Paige had to give up the Women’s Title if she is going to still be at every NXT taping anyway.

Two guys I swear I’ve never seen before are in the back cutting a promo. No graphic ever appears on the screen to alert viewers as to exactly who these gentleman are. One of them identifies himself as Tye Dillinger which I do remember after hearing it but his face was not something I have ever stored in my memory bank. That’s something to work on NXT creative! His partner never is identified in this segment.

Tye Dillinger and Jason Jordan vs. Stuart Cumberland and Phillip Goujlar

Now that we have identified both of their names, let’s work on their move set, their characters, and their look so this does not happen again. Their opponents are jobbers who have committed the ultimate jobber sin in my opinion: having boring and difficult to pronounce names. Anyway this match was nothing. Just a squash where the squashers did nothing to stand out from the pack at all. Jordan won with the Jordan Slam which is of course an Angle Slam  because using maneuvers so specifically identified with a major star of the past is working out great for Mojo Rawley.

CJ Parker is shown in the crowd with one of his hippie environmentalist signs. This isn’t working either.

In the BFF locker room, tension continues to mount as Summer is obviously back to take back over the leadership position in the group. But Charlotte, the Women’s Champion, obviously sees herself as the leader now. Sasha Banks calls herself “The Boss” so that’s all there needs to be said about that. This is working and I look forward to where this goes.

Tyler Breeze makes his way to the ring for his music video premiere. He really has this gimmick down pat and this is one that will translate to the big stage because it is a modern takeoff of an old gimmick that has worked for 30 years. He refers to Sami Zayn as “Seth Rogan’s less good looking little brother” which was funny. He says that he is the number one contender and can take his shot whenever he wants it but that he is going to make Adrian Neville, who he called “the man that Maybelline forgot”,  wait for it. He then introduced his music video calling it a “3 time MTV Euro Music Award Winner”. The video opened with the words “this one goes out to all my fans, even the uggos.” The song and video are what they are supposed to be, corny and cheap, while being presented by Tyler as being extraordinary and extravagant. Great stuff here from Tyler and the NXT production staff.

Not so great stuff from the NXT production staff as the graphic for the non-title main event between Adrian Neville and Justin Gabriel is incorrectly labeled a No Disqualification Match for the title. I didn’t even realize until after the match that was a mistake.

The NXT production staff then completely redeems itself with an awesome music video tribute to Bo Dallas’ last night in NXT 2 weeks ago. The music is pitch perfect 80’s cheese. We are treated to never before seen after the match shenanigans between Bo and the crowd as they tell him to “Bo-Leive” and he tells them to get out. After a hilarious back-and-forth Bo says that he is getting campus security and walks off. Watch this segment!

Adrian Neville vs. Justin Gabriel in a non-title match

They have a good baby face match which confuses me since I thought it was No DQ and Gabriel had turned heel at some point. I do not do play-by-play for this show and there isn’t much to say about it besides that it’s good and you should watch it. Neville wins with the Red Arrow.

After the match, Tyson Kidd returns to confront Adrian Neville and challenge him to one more NXT Championship Match. Neville accepts and they finally shake hands. The show goes off the air with a title match made for some time in the indeterminate future.

thread_hijack_in_progress_signJeremy & Kevin are here again to talk about Raw and how badly the hijacking went in Chicago. But first they start on one of many tangents that included kale shakes, Roberto Luongo being traded back to the Florida Panthers and cable providers. They focus back in on Raw. After talking about how Paul Heyman defused the situation, how was the crowd. How well did Kevin know the hijacking manifesto? Does Jeremy ever laugh out loud while reading the objectives? Aren’t some of the objectives being fulfilled by the WWE already? Do your hosts wonder if they’d want to be this young and idealist like the manifesto writer? They wonder back around to singing the praises for Paul Heyman’s speech which transitioned well into the crowd eating up Brock Lesnar. How dumb is Mark Henry? Should he have put up more of a fight? Daniel Bryan against HHH gets some attention but could Bryan still be inserted into the title picture with Randy Orton’s involvement in the main event? How unsettled is the WrestleMania card? Are the guys worried about it since they will be in attendance? Brock Lesnar gets more talk because he is in one of the confirmed matches with the Undertaker. CM Punk had a confirmed part on the WrestleMania card, so why should the fans be on his side anyway? Doesn’t that make the build up between Bryan and HHH seem stretched? But does the average fan notice? The Shield gets talked about too. Are they going to have a triple threat match at WrestleMania? How does Bray Wyatt’s spot against John Cena compare to Chris Jericho versus Fandango last year? Have you been able to follow this write up? If you did click on the tangent filled link below!

Random NXT: The Arrival Thoughts

nxt-arrival-p

The opening match of NXT Arrival made absolute sense. There was no way this match was going to disappoint and really it was bound to upstage anything else on the card. Placing it first with plenty of buffer matches in between allowed the Women’s Title match as well as the NXT Title match to still make an impact.

Wow, that was just great stuff. Cesaro winning never seemed like a forgone conclusion even though he has been heavily featured on WWE programming. Sami Zayn is going to do big things when he gets the call up and after that match it seems like a forgone conclusion he will be up sometime after WrestleMania.

Thus starts the “Not ready for the big show” part of the event.

Mojo Rawley has the look of Nikoli Volkoff. That works for the 80’s but now it makes him bland. His gimmick of the over excited, hyped, frat brother isn’t going to work in the big show but it does make him standout in the smaller NXT.

CJ Parker’s promos crack me up but the overall gimmick will get lost like Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks. Yeah I used Reks because they both have dreads.

William Regal is awesome.

The Ascension; yuck name. What does The Ascension even mean as a tag team name? Their gimmick is right out of that awkward transition period between the early 90’s and late 90’s. Pairing them with Too Cool though made both men look huge and absolutely intimidating. Despite the criticism this was a solid, formula tag team that did its job in showcasing The Ascension. With the right tweaking they could be up on the main stage soon enough.

There was something totally different about Stephanie McMahon. Her character was totally different and dare I say she looked like she was totally enjoying herself? Oh and maybe basking in a tad bit of pride over her husband’s baby.

William Regal is awesome.

Are Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards Headed To The WWE?

This clip from Preston City Wrestling has people wondering if Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards have signed with the WWE. If they have, I will have to compliment ROH for keeping them off TV for most of the last several months. When they have been on, it’s been in the tag team division. The last point is where I think the WWE would put them because neither of these guys have fantastic mic skills. I mean, you did watch that Youtube clip above, right? It’s also good thing for both of these wrestlers that the WWE has revived the use of manager’s also because of said verbal abilities. I enjoy Eddie Edwards but still have yet to figure out why Davey Richards has ever been called “Best In The World”. If they have signed with the WWE, it will be interesting to see if they get the CM Punk treatment and get sent to NXT to learn the WWE style or if they get a pass straight to the main roster.

Since Davey was vague in the above promo, there is still the possibility that they have signed with TNA. That would be a mistake on both ends. Richards & Edwards aren’t going to bring in new fans. Likewise they won’t garner any new fans in TNA or if they do, it won’t be enough to budge the needle. Richards & Edwards would probably just do the same American Wolves schtick in TNA since everyone stagnates there. In the WWE, they would at least be challenged to come up with a new gimmick. We’ll have a howling good time waiting to see where these two wrestlers find their new hunting ground. – Kevin

Breaking Down AJ Lee Destroying #TotalDivas

From Facebook.com

From Facebook.com

Jeremy:  so watched that AJ segment again. i don;t understand why they did that. They buried a successful show and in process turned the heel champ face

Kevin:  That segment was awesome & bizarre because of the reasons you listed.
Jeremy:  I understand they want to get a feud going and that makes sense but damn. She didn’t say one incorrect thing. Even heels will distort truth but she didn’t.
Kevin:  I do think that’s the odd thing about the show though. For all of its’ vapidness, it’s one of the better reality shows I’ve watched.
That’s not saying a whole lot but it is giving the ladies a personality.
Jeremy:  I am getting a little worn down. Maybe the formula for those shows is set the players, conflict, resolution. They always wrap up their issues instead of long arcs. So it comes off really scripted. They have personalities then go on TV and have completely different ones.
Kevin:  It’s really tough to keep track of the Funkadactyls because they’re the only ones on the show who have different stage names than their real names.
Jeremy:  The thick one is Trinity? The other one is annoying and too skinny.
Kevin:  That is the other funny thing, I know them by their real names but not their stage names. Ariane is the lighter skinned, smaller one. Trinity is the darker skinned, booty having, Uso dating one.
From WWE.com

From WWE.com

Jeremy:  Cameron? Naomi is Trinity? But look, who cares cause, well, Trinity….delicious.
Kevin:  Yes she is.
Jeremy:  Of the women on the show she is about the only one to even consider dating. Natalie would be fine if you liek pushovers.

Kevin:  Nattie would be fine but you’d end up hearing her say “Put it in my Hart Dungeon” and I’d go limp.
Jeremy:  As long as she meant that ass I am fine with it. I do admire how all of the men on the show are doofuses excpet for the main eventers.
Kevin:  Do you consider Jon Uso a main eventer? He seems fairly likeable. Every other guy though is an idiot.
Jeremy:  He has been OK and no chance he is a main eventer, I just meant Cena and Daniel Bryan
Kevin:  I didn’t think he was in that category but had to ask since he’s been fine. Cena has gotten more time or is more vocal than Bryan so he’s turned me more.
Jeremy:  Cena has been the star for me. he steals every scene. Him essentially telling Nikki to slow down was classic.
then he teaches her Chinese as well as giving her essential life lessons that a nine year old could give.
Kevin:  Kind of says something about their parents that they didn’t get a lesson a nine year old should learn
Jeremy:  Part of me hopes this is all a set up and the end of the season she dumps him or he gives bad advice and it all blows up.
Kevin:  She’s not going to break up with him so option 2 is a possibility.
Jeremy:  Yeah I had those backwards. One other important part of the AJ Lee beat down last night and you touched on it in your Raw review is that the Bellas were terrible. I kept commenting how AJ is right there get to walking broads. Instead all they did was screech from ringside. It was embarrassing.
Kevin:  “Come say it to my face.” How fucking dumb. That’s reserved for when they do the promo from satellite or back stage. Hell, even if AJ would have had Big E standing behind her it would have made more sense. But he wasn’t and she was on the damn stage. I about died from laughter when you texted the comment about them skipping after the beat down.

Jeremy:  Yup no Big E
Kevin:  That isn’t even a half assed response. It’s not a response.
Jeremy:  Have to think that was on purpose as well, she’s standing on her own with it. I am not even giving the Bellas a pass even though the other three just stood there.Show some god damn emotion bitches
Kevin:  At least the baby faces looked disgusted and waved their hands at her as in “Get out of here, we’re wrestlers too” so even though it was a weak response, it was a better than the Bellas.
Jeremy:  I am not sure giving the “talk to the hand” motion really qualifies as better. Nattie had somewhat of a smirk on her face but that was about it.

Kevin:  Anything is better than dancing “ring around the posies” style after getting a verbal beat down. It’s not even a good response but it’s better than dancing.
Jeremy:  That was douche chill inducing. Then it made me think of The Bellas interfering in a match using a duck call or something?
Kevin:  I don’t remember that if it happened. Wasn’t quite sure of the Bellas & Eva Marie’s outfit choices but they did stand out and have some style.
Jeremy:  Well Eva Marie will stand out based on her hair and height. Her heels prevented her from skipping which made that scene just awkward.
Kevin:  I wish I would have re-watched it just to catch that. Eva does look like a stork out there compared to the rest of the lot.

Jeremy:  She looked like a Waterpillar out there with the Bellas dancing all over the place
Kevin:  I may have fallen over laughing from the stupidity of it all if she started doing the sprinkler dance as they danced around her.
Jeremy:  It isn’t exactly her fault but she should have been more prepared. I figure they were having a good life or a healthy cringe during that.,
Kevin:  They all should have been more prepared.
Jeremy:  Isn’t the rule of live entertainment “Always be prepared”? I am still chalking it up to a lack of talent.
Kevin:  Yeah, I’m thinking that’s why the WWE isn’t featuring them. The whole division blows.
Kaitlyn deserves better than the usual scorned woman schtick but I’m pretty sure she’s not the next Trish Stratus.
Jeremy:  I was wondering why AJ and Kaitlin were not on the show. Aksana as well, get the international flavor.
From Fanpop.com

From Fanpop.com

Kevin:  How dare you forget about Rosa! But it makes no sense for them not to use the whole division. Rosa, Tamina & Layla, with a possible late arrival of Summer Rae would have gotten all of the division on the show.
Jeremy:  Oh wow. yeah forgot about her, that cast would have made the show so much better.
Kevin:  Only thing I can think of is that they thought too many “characters” would be on the show if they did the whole division.
Jeremy:  No I meant excuse the entire first cast outside of Trinity of course. I suppose there is always next season.
Kevin:  The WWE doesn’t like to renew shows that are doing well like NXT so this one will probably get cancelled too.
Jeremy:  Well the ratings dictate a renewal but it is on E! so may be out of their hands.
