#SippyTimeBeer Review – Tour of @NorthHighBrew

IMG_20140413_160726_418

Looking into the bar area thru the old windows of Brown Hall into the brewing area.

My lady decided to purchase a Groupon then toss her half to her father so that we could attend a tour of the brewery together. I have had their beers before at various locations around town but I had never been to their bar and brew house. We had to wait for the tour to start so her father grabbed a Wildcard! English Ale and I snagged a Maibock, which isn’t listed on either of their menus. It got my attention because it was a malt heavy drink. It delivered too.

Gavin, one of the owners, was the leader of the tour although he was about as hoarse as me last week after Wrestlemania. He had done four tours the day before and he had to shout which killed his voice. It was a slow afternoon so it wasn’t too hard for him to talk to us. He first talked about the design of the bar. They re-used plenty of materials to build just about everything in the bar. Old growlers were used to create light fixtures. Old mail boxes from New Orleans are now used to house patron’s glass mugs that are made from any broken glass at the bar itself. It’s quite a deal too as you get a 20-24 ounce mug and only pay for a pint when it gets filled. They have multiple windows above the back of the bar that are from the now demolished Brown Hall, which used to be the architecture building at Ohio State. That isn’t the only re-used piece of wood from Ohio State as all of their tap handles and their blinds on the front of the building are from the old seats at Ohio Stadium. Rail road tracks are used the foot rest at the bars. I’m sure I’ve forgotten some of what was re-used but it was all very well put together for a fairly small space just south of campus.

Gavin then moved on to talk about malted barley, roasted barley, hops and water which are the main ingredients in beer. The malted barley does have a different taste than when it goes into a beverage. We were advised not to eat the hops straight so I declined. I know I don’t like IPAs that heavy in hops anyway. Gavin moved us into the brewing area, which you can see from the bar area because of the Brown Hall windows. They have two kettles that are 60 gallons to make their mash in. When brewing for themselves, they cook it for 7 hours. The cool thing about this brewery though is that you can pay them $190-240 to brew your own beer. When they brew for you, they only use the kettles for 3 hours. Your costs gets you 15 gallons of beer which is nearly a keg. My neighbors and I are debating doing this. At the present moment, they are splitting time brewing customers beers and their beers which has caused problems from time to time supplying their own beer. They will be expanding to a facility on 5th Avenue and Cleveland Ave where they will upgrade to two 600 gallon tanks to make their own beers. The location at the bar will become just for customers only. That is a very tasty way to solve the problem. Gavin then walked us through the rest brewing process and showed us their storage area, which contains quite a large amount of beer. The casks the beer is stored in used to only be on the floor and are now stacked three high. It’s only another reason to get the 10,000 square foot facility up and running.

After the brewery tour, we got shirts and then we have an “optional” tasting for legal reasons. They were out of two of their beers but we still only four of their available six beers. It just so happened that her father & I ordered the two beers not in the tasting. Gavin said that they list their beers in order of IBUs because it is a measurable taste unit and will help people judge which beers they like. They started us off with their Blonde Ale which is 16 IBUs and 4.2% alcohol. It had a nice crispness to it and complexity that was perfect for a nice warm day as it was. They moved on to their Queen Madine Chocolate Milk Stout. Gavin said that most people assume darker beers are more bitter but this one is only 20 IBUs so there was more of a bite to it but the sweetness of the milk helped to even it out. One participant bewildered Gavin when she told him she didn’t like Left Hand Brewing’s Milk Stout, which he was about to use as an example as an excellent one, and she preferred theirs. I liked this beer a lot but I think Left Hand beats them out by an udder. Queen Madine was 6.0% ABV. We moved on to their English Special Bitter or E.S.B. It comes in at 40 IBUs which is where my lady’s father tapped out. I’ve worked way beyond this point. I really enjoyed this beer as I haven’t had this style since being in Europe in 1997. There was a lot more to it than the bitterness. It had a sweetness and even a back door hint of malt which made it really complex and tasty. The E.S.B. was 5.9% ABV. The last beer of the tasting was their Indian Pale Ale, which is so named because the English sailors realized that beer lasted longer when it had more hops in it. For an IPA, I don’t think the 70 IBUs is that high since I’ve tried beers over 100. It’s certainly a heavy dose but nothing I can’t handle. Her father didn’t even try and handed me his sample. I didn’t argue. It was a good beer but the E.S.B. remained my favorite. The IPA came in at 6.3% which made it the most potent beer of the tasting.

I will definitely try and make a habit of swinging by there more often though it’s marginally harder to get to than some of the other breweries in town. Now if I can just figure out a beer to brew with my neighbors and an occasion to drink all of that beer. – Kevin

Stunt Granny Audio #242

Kevin & Jeremy are back after a hiatus for the holidays. They start the show just in time to listen to the big announcement from the WWE about the WWE Network. Are their questions answered by the presentation? Will you be able to watch Mid-South Wrestling content? How exactly can the WWE revolutionize the way media is distributed? Is the cost worth it? When was the last time Kevin ordered Summerslam? Or Survivor Series? Is Jeremy ready to be the host for Legends House? Will it be as funny as the Surreal Life? The guys move on to talking about other events surrounding the WWE, the most recent announcement prior to this one was Kaitlyn leaving the WWE on mutual terms. Will the Diva’s Division be built up now that the WWE will have even more programming? Or is Total Divas going to be what the Divas strive for going forward? What has happened to AJ Lee? Do we get just enough Alicia Fox during her run ins on the show? What level of hot is Kaitlyn? The last topic of the night is Daniel Bryan and the above clip of Michigan State football doing the Yes! chant at halftime of the Ohio State vs MSU game at the Breslin Center. How much money is the WWE leaving on the table? Was CM Punk ever as popular as Daniel Bryan or are we tainted by the raucous crowd in Chicago for his title win against John Cena? Has Punk’s mic skills gotten in the way of him creating an easy chant like Yes!? Is the Bryan turn only a temporary thing for Wrestlemania season? Is it because physically large stars like Batista and Brock Lesnar are coming back? Or is it because the WWE is depending on these stars because of how long they have been established? Find out that and more when you click on the link below!

Kevin’s Blog: Open Letter To The Columbus #Crew96

Red Bulls vs The Crew

I might not have any pictures like this on my Instagram account any more. Thanks Crew Sales team for being a bunch of tone deaf morons.

Kevin,

We value your commitment as a Crew season ticket holder and want to ensure we are helping you maximize your season ticket holder experience. To date, your membership score is 65.3 (out of a possible 100 points) of your membership. There are many factors that contribute to your Membership Score, so I wanted to share some suggestions to help you take full advantage of your season ticket holder experience.

I got an email yesterday from the Columbus Crew. After the part of the letter above, they decided to list the ways that I could become more involved with the club. I think their intention was to tell me “You have more stuff you can take advantage of” but I can’t get around the score part of this email. I know I shouldn’t be insulted by it, but I am. Even after getting a “clarification” today, I am still mad because the problems still persists in the apology. We, the fans, were at blame for misinterpreting their email. I didn’t misinterpret anything, you told me I was 65.3% of a fan. How about someone speak up at the sales meeting and say “This is an awful idea that insults the people we are trying to get to purchase more tickets.” Evidently a bunch of spineless cowards works under Mike Malo, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing, and Tom Bowden, Director of Client Services, who sent the initial email.

The first major purchase I made after my financial crisis was to purchase a full season ticket to the Crew because they are the only team in Columbus that I truly root for. I didn’t go to school at Ohio State. I didn’t even grow up in the state. Though hockey is my favorite sport, I don’t truly root for the Columbus Bluejackets. In fact, I have told their reps, many of them over the years, that I am a Pittsburgh Penguins fan and am purchasing tickets solely to see them play. I am currently holding a pair of half season tickets and a PSL at Nationwide Arena. They realize that the job of a salesman is to be nice to the customer who is forking over his hard earned dough. The Bluejackets to this date have not sent me an email this insulting despite the fact that I tell them I’m actively rooting against their team.

Speaking of hard earned dough, one of the reasons I can afford to have both season tickets to the Crew and the Bluejackets is because I take my job very seriously and work on Saturdays to finish jobs that need to get out of our office. Does that cause me to miss some of the events that the Crew and the Bluejackets host? You better believe it does. It’s pretty clear that Mr. Malo & Mr. Bowden don’t work hard enough at their jobs or else they wouldn’t have sent out such a boneheaded email. Also falling under the hard earned money concept is the fact that I’ve bought tickets for my girlfriend the last two years to multiple games even though she doesn’t like soccer. She wanted to spend more time with me. I went from purchasing single game tickets last year to upgrading her to a 10 game package this year. Maybe since I’m only 65.3% of a fan, I’ll stop purchasing her tickets. Maybe since I’m closer to only being half a fan than a full fan, I’ll down grade to half a season plan. That will help you get to your goal of 10k full season ticket holders, right? Since you have been working on that plan for 3 years now, I’ll go ahead and give you a 0.00 for your rating as a sales team. –Kevin Gold Level Member #2425281 (Not For Long)

Kevin’s Blog: Almost Live, Definitely Half Assed Review of #Raw

The Frozen Diamond Face Off between Ohio State & Michigan at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

I hope you had a good weekend. I did in the fine city of Cleveland. I had some fantastic beer at the Market Garden Brewery (St. Emeric’s Stout was the best. The Pearl Street Wheat was a close second.) then I picked up some killer andouille sausage and Krakow keilbasa at the West Side Market. At night, wegot to eat at Fahrenheit. Absolutely fantastic food, highly recommended if you don’t mind dropping $25+ on a meal. We attended the game on Sunday. Michigan put a serious hurting on OSU. I was not surprised to hear (although I didn’t confirm) that Michigan has ten NHL draft picks. OSU (also not confirmed) has five draft picks. That’s a whole lot of talent on the ice. Great time if you don’t mind being outside in 25 degree temperatures. Enough about the weekend, let’s roll.

Mick Foley gets to hear the same reaction he heard when the Rock was beating the tar out of him all of those years ago with a chair since they’re in Anaheim, absolutely nothing. They are easily the worst crowd in wrestling. A Pro Wrestling Ohio crowd has a better reaction. Dolph comes down and runs down Foley. Dolph killed. Foley did a good job of playing his part. CM Punk then arrives. Punk does a good job of mixing comedy and being serious. Johnny Wooden GM kills the momentum. Jesus, this crowd actually does something but only chants “What?” Fuck Anaheim. Johnny Law says no Mick Foley in the Royal Rumble. Somehow I get the idea he’s going to get in or else they wouldn’t have floated the idea out there. Mitchell Cool & Jerry Lawler recap the dunce move of giving away the tag titles at a house show.

Rosa smokes more than the andouille sausage I bought. At least we got the footage. They have less light at their house show footage than PWO. Terrible. Of course Bourne took the pin. He’s taking the beating to start the match too. Did I mention that it’s not fair the Hunico & his man crush get stuck with a low rider bike and Epico & Primo get Rosa? The tag titles mean jack. Johnny is back in our lives. He mysteriously talks to someone. The reveal is Jericho who turns off the lights and let’s the jacket sign. OK, I’m amused by the mute act again.

Zack Ryder still gets Eve Torres. He goes serious to sell the injury and show his resolve. He can work on the facials a bit. I like the message though. Kane replay.

We got Jack Swagger before the commercial break. Ryder arrives after. How the mighty have fallen. Ryder kicks out of the Swagger Bomb. Even worse, he kicks out of a second. A third one does him in. For some reason, they give him the title. I’m confused. I love Zack and all but he’s not ready to move up the card, the usual reason for losing that title. Is he injured? Did I miss something other than the crowd going crazy for him?

Kevin Went To WWE Raw At Nationwide Arena

Welcome to Nationwide Arena in Columbus OH!

I’m going to compile my tweets for this post and add some commentary. I’ll get more into it when we do a audio/podcast. Speaking of which, I completely failed on making a logo for iTunes. Or any work on the t shirt design. Anywho, this will be some additional information while with holding any thoughts on the quality of the show. I can’t stop watching American Ninja Warrior. Just saying.

I’m sure #Raw is here tonight. Wouldn’t be able to tell from the empty parking lots.

Half empty

(Commentary: For Columbus Bluejackets or Clippers games, I wouldn’t have been able to park here unless I got in much earlier to the event. The Jackets games aren’t even selling out but they are far more cars there. I would have been parking in the lot one street farther away from the arena.)

I’m pretty sure the upper deck is only open across from the hard camera. I’m near the stage. Good seat. Nothing happening. (Commentary: I expected something to start around 7:45 which is when I got to the parking lot. I didn’t think I’d be waiting another thirty minutes later.)

@missiebird That’d be yahoo Kevin (Commentary: Our good friend Missie checked in. Unlike my prick site mates.)

I came sober. I’m an idiot. (Commentary: I usually have a couple of beers before heading down. I neglected to do so today. It was my mistake because I was stuck in between two fat people. The bitch to my right wouldn’t even stand up to let me through when I thought I was seated past her. I will save my wrath for my neighbor to the left for later. I’m drinking water now. I got to work tomorrow.)

Some adult had their title belt inside of a custom fitted bag. The dork bar has been raised. (Commentary: Need I say more?)

Retrospective of #Wrestlemania Not much time for Superstars. They have the skirt up for it. (Commentary: I expected a little more length out of these matches. I’m not sure completely why.)

Some African American woman is introing Primo & Do You Remember Drew McIntyre who gets a decent pop. (Commentary: Drew ended up with the biggest pop for anyone before Raw. I’m confused too. I haven’t looked up who the ring announcer was.)

Drew did a knip up during the match. Future shock DDT for the win. FBI chant for Little Guido. Still a strangely large cheer for Drew. (Commentary: The knip up was more confirmation that Drew is a face now for some reason or another. I’m still confused.)

Kevin’s Blog: Almost Live, Definitely Half Assed Review of Impact Wrestling

Since I couldn't organzie our crew, I'm imposing self torture.

I started asking too late in the week who was busy what night. So my self torture involves reviewing Impact Wrestling. It’s this or watch the NBA Finals. I’ll check in on it but who cares. I’m an NHL guy. Ryan Kesler made a hell of a play to set up the game winner for the Canucks last night. I got to watch him at Ohio State and now he’s the best US born player in the NHL. Complete silliness that I need to wait until Saturday to watch another game.  In other positive news, Sidney Crosby was cleared for his summer work out. My Penguins will be back next season. On to the inevitable.

Bischoff starts off by telling a guy in a suit he doesn’t do autographs. I’m ready to poke my eyes out already. We blend right into a brawl between ODB, Velvet Sky & Lee South. Could they involve more useless behind the scenes people? ODB fails to break the table when she slams her on a table. I was fast forwarding but it was amusing to see Velvet Sky cover up while she wore a bikini. Dumb broad. Tessmacher is thrown into the skit for no reason. In the middle of previews, we get Mr. Anderson doing the Sting imitation. This company can not get enough of imitations. He’s taking on someone from Sting’s past. I can’t wait for the swerve. Kendrick asks for another match against Abyss. Bischoff tells him to fight Kazarian. For some reason Kendrick is involved. You don’t get a shot at the title whether you win or lose dummy.

More Bischoff from “during the break”  and in the ring. Roode doing the smart thing and not handing over the Tag Titles. Alex Shelley comes out to a luke warm welcome after a long abscence. Sabin torn his ACL & MCL so he’s out for a year. Shelley is teaming with Storm at the PPV. Yeah?

Crimson (not the PWO variety) takes on “Cold Blooded” Matt Hardy. I’m glad Hardy got rid of the braids but his look is exactly the same as in WWE. The pants are the same design he used for ages with different material. Why is Hardy calling for the Twist of Hate? That’s a face move. Sky High does it for Crimson. Hardy wrestled the same match he did in the WWE too. If they were holding you back, why aren’t you showing them what they missed out on? Joe gets speared when he tries to charge the ring.

Smackdown Spoilers

Taken for the sole purpose of using for this spoiler post.

I tweeted all of the results from @Stuntgranny last night. When I got home, Kent State was in the process of losing at Colorado so I was too consumed to put this post together.  I’m going to string together my tweets and add a little extra commentary. I’m hoping to talk about Raw and this taping so I’m reserving some commentary for your ear holes. Since these are spoilers, I’ll only show my first Tweet before putting up a read more link.

Tweet: The parkin is barren. I’m either here early or it’s a light crowd -K. After: The parking, I hate spelling mistakes, was light as was the crowd. They had a whole lot of tarped off area. I went to a Blue Jackets game last week and there was 8-10000 people. There couldn’t have been any more last night.
