#SippyTimeBeer Review – What I Drank During The Super Bowl

Elevator Thirsty Dog Tommyknocker

Elevator Brewing CompanyWicked Goat Barrel Aged I.P.A. – This beer is a departure from the normal I.P.A. because of the barrel aging. It dulls the taste of the hops or they don’t put in as much as normal. It tastes like they’re using an oak barrel because it definitely has a hint of it in the flavor. This beer is out of Columbus. They have a fabulous brew pub that was the earliest I had heard of aside from the Columbus Brewing Company. I have a vague story about my bachelor party from Elevator but I’ll save that for another time.

Thirsty Dog Brewing CompanyWhippet Wheat – This is my favorite beer from Thirsty Dog. As you can imagine names all of their names have a dog reference in them. The alliteration should not dissuade you from trying this beer. It is extremely smooth German Weizen beer. You can definitely taste the banana in there with something else surrounding it which ends up being clove and vanilla. You can check to see if it’s in your area here. I suggest finding it if you’re in one of those states. It may be out of Akron, but it has solid distribution.

TommyKnocker BreweryButt Head Doppelbock Lager – I’ve got to admit, I didn’t actually drink this one during the game. I like keeping a trio of reviews at a time though. I had this one for my dad’s 70th birthday party. As far as I know, this beer has been sitting in my parent’s fridge for two years. I’m not sure if that changed the taste at all. Although it was a lager, it was thicker than normal and the tasty were more like a porter. It does use caramel malt like the Founder’s Porter. It was tasty for a possibly skunked out beer. I’ll give it another taste from a fresh bottle just to be sure. This beer is the only one on this list not from Ohio. It’s out of Colorado. Here’s their distribution so taste one and make sure it isn’t skunky too. -Kevin

#SippyTimeBeer Review

Abita Brew Kettle Founders

Abita Brewing CompanySatsuma Harvest Wit – I learned what a satsuma is this weekend.  It’s the name for a tangerine since it was originally from the Satsuma province of Japan. The good folks from Abita Springs, LA got a hold of them for a very refreshing beer. I’m not one for summer shandies because I think they get heavy handed in the fruit department. This beer left just enough orange flavor on my palate. It was a nice change after drinking a rye beer, which I won’t review today. Abita makes good products so go out there and hunt this one down.

The Brew KettleLake BeErie – This beer is from Strongsville, OH which is west of my old stomping grounds at Kent. As far as I can tell, the distribution is just in Ohio and specifically for their Taproom and Brewhouse. This beer has confirmed something that I’ve been thinking since starting these reviews, I’m not a big pilsner fan. They’re just there. It’s hard to describe something that goes in and out almost as smoothly as water. I’m not the biggest fan of “cute” names especially when you look at the map and still see a solid 30-45 minute drive from Strongsville to Lake Erie. For a pilsner, I’d pick this one over the Victory Prima Pils though.

Founders Brewing CompanyPorter – It’s billed as dark, rich and sexy. I can agree on the first two parts. The last part might happen if you have enough of them at the bar and you strap on your beer goggles. This porter is dark and rich enough to drink like a stout. They say there’s chocolate and caramel (also called crystal) malt. I didn’t taste much of the chocolate but I did taste the toffee flavor which to me is more like a coffee flavor. Here’s TheFullPint review. They’re out of Grand Rapids, MI and have a find it search for their products in your area. There isn’t anything too fancy to this porter and that makes it just right to drink, hopefully in your area. -Kevin

#SippyTimeBeer Review – 3rd Annual #Cbus Winter Beerfest

I went to the 3rd Annual Columbus Winter Beerfest on Saturday. It was the first time I’ve attended the event. I went with my girl and my neighbors. We paid for the VIP entrance an hour early at 6:30 PM and it lasted until 11:00 PM. We got a set of twenty five tickets, one for each beer that you could taste. Many of the vendors didn’t care if you gave them one or not. The samples were supposed to be 5 ounces but most of the vendors topped you off to about 8 ounces. In no way am I capable any more of drinking that much. I got around to twelve samples. Here’s the list.

Weasel Boy BrewingBarrel Aged Brown Stoat Cherry Stout – I started off the night with a local beer from Zanesville, OH. It was a wise choice as it was quite good. It had nice head and was as thick as expected out of a stout. The cherry kicked in as an aftertaste. I think it matches well with a stout. It was one of my favorites of the night.

Victory Brewing CompanyRed Thunder – This beer was served to VIPs only. It became a mission to try as many VIP only beers as possible in our hour head start. It wasn’t as much of a help though because a majority of the crowd pitched in the extra $10 for the the extra hour. This beer was served out of a double deuce bottle that was chilled on ice. They don’t have this beer on their website so it was an exclusive. It tasted like a red amber. A big bounce back from the Prima Pils.

Six Point BrewingResin – I’m not much of an India Pale Ale fan. The heavy dose of hops is not my favorite taste. This IPA is very tasty. The hops was kept to the minimum considering the type of beer. They’re out of Brooklyn, New York.

Kona Brewing CompanyBig Wave Golden Ale – This beer was very crisp and refreshing. This one would be my other favorite beer of the night. Outstandingly smooth. They’re out of Kona, Hawaii so I won’t be able to get this one too often. That’s too bad.

Green Flash BrewingSaison Diego – I was told this was “some type of Belgian Blonde” by the woman working the counter. On the beer map, it was called Grand Cru but it is definitely not that. I’m guessing that it is the Saison Deigo because of the slight fruit note at the end with a summer ale feel. As can be implied by the name, they’re out of San Diego, CA.

North Peak Brewing CompanySiren Amber Ale – This beer got the thirty two second video review above. It was very tasty with some spice kick at the end. I did this review just in time because things started to get ugly soon there after. My presentation could have been better. As I do more of them, hopefully they’ll get better. I hope not to tell my camera woman when to cut next time. They’re out of Traverse City, MI.

Stunt Granny Audio #208

Eric and Kevin are back, and the boys discuss Kevin attending WWE Monday Night Raw in Columbus, Ohio. Who was over? Who was a dud? What was Kevin’s favorite moment? His biggest disappointment? What did the guys think of the Jerry Lawler-CM Punk-Paul Heyman-Mick Foley angle? The Ryback-Brad Maddox match? The action-packed 8-man tag? They also do some quick hits: Will Steve Austin wrestle CM Punk, and would they spend the money for a ticket? What’s their favorite Eddie Guerrero memory? Will they spend $1.98 on the paperback version of AJ Styles’ book? All this and a little more!

Stunt Granny Audio Show #208

The Big 11

St. Francis of Assissi was the first case of extrabiblical stigmata in history.

We decided to add a new feature to the site which was supposed to run every Friday but because both Eric & I traveled yesterday, so it got put off until today. We also wanted to count down the top 11 moments of the week in our minds but we’re a bunch of slackers and could only come up with six this week. It doesn’t help that wrestling news was absent this week. Kind of like the regular news, did you see how many places were running Ted Williams, the homeless guy from Columbus OH, stories? This year is getting off to a shitty start on all fronts.

1. CM Punk – The subversive superstar strikes again with stigmata marks on the palms of his hands. In a world where Vince McMahon can wrestle God, Punk had damn well better get a free pass on this one. By the way, what’s the difference between Jesus and an oil painting? You only need one nail to hang a painting. – Eric

2. HD Viewing – I recently got into HD viewing act. I watch Raw, Superstars & Smackdown all in HD. I even started reviewing an episode of Pro Wrestling Ohio in HD. ROH is on HDNet. Guess who isn’t on an HD station for me, TNA. It is appropriate that I view the lowest form of wrestling not in HD. – Kevin

3. The Miz – WWE seems to be behind this guy and features him prominently on TV. Of course ratings have been down ever since his title win but who cares. He’s a fresh face carrying the program and his performance does not warrant yanking it away. – Jeremy

4. Tough Enough – WWE decides to bring back a show that is muich beloved but has produced so little. Yup, John Morrision is an alum who has moved up the ladder but no one else has done a thing. So Tough Enough comes in with high expectations when it should have none. The history of WWE reality television ranks somewhere between swine flu and chicken pox so expecting gold flecks of joy are is really kind of silly. – Jeremy

5. Josh Matthews – Jeremy may not count him as a Tough Enough alum but I do. He’s been all over WWE programming the last couple of weeks. He worked well as the play by play guy on Smackdown but struggled as the color man on Raw this week. While on Smackdown last week, Michael Cole made fun of him for filling in for Jerry “The King” Lawler on Raw and Todd Grisham on that program, Matthews had a perfect response “Don’t forget I was on Superstars too.” – Kevin

6. Dolph Ziggler – My fellow Kent State alumni may have lost his Intercontinental Championship yesterday but he gained even more momentum by becoming the number one contender for Edge’s World Heavyweight Championship. He’s been wrestling great matches. They have a built in Vickie Guerrero angle for this feud so look for these two to get things off on the right foot in the New Year. – Kevin

Dusty Edit: I swear I didn’t know about this, or else I would have come up with 5 entries earlier to fill this out. Consider this an addendum.

7. Nick Gage – The indy wrestler extraordinaire robbed a bank a while ago, and turned himself in on January 1. A few days earlier, CZW had put up a disclaimer on their website encouraging people not to conduct themselves the way Nick Gage did, which was pretty lolsome. In any event, real men don’t turn themselves in. Real men run and hide, and when they get caught, they go out kicking and screaming.

8. Paul London reviewed Ring of Hell – Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0vaAuVBqE8. London gets my undying respect for basically turning himself into wrestling’s version of Marc Maron, who happens to be my favorite comedian right now. Hopefully pretty soon London will film a video of him trying to get his cats to perform stupid stunts for the camera.

9. Marty Jannetty – I love me some Marty Jannetty. Here’s what he posted December 31 on his Facebook page: it’s almost noon and I aint had a single dagum(borrowed word from Bobby Bowden) drink yet..what the hey, this aint right..I was hoping to see the kick-off of the Georgia Bulldongs game but not remember anything after that…I’m b’hind schedule here..any suckgestions?

10. New Best Match Ever – It’s this:

11. Full House Reviewed – It’s not wrestling related, but who gives a shit. Go to fullhousereviewed.wordpress.com for all the fun. But then be sure to come back here, because here is more important than there, or everywhere… – Dusty

Spoilers From Tonight’s WWE Raw Taping II

Stunt Granny is live again for the second time in a month at Raw!

I forgot that Mr. Eric Nelson is attending Raw tonight from Des Moines, Iowa. He’s passing along some spoilers so I’m here to add my snarky comments to his live texting. Let’s rock this bitch out like Hold For Swank.

8:19 PM EST – Almost no reactions for anyone during the mania intro video, just lots of woos. Could be an interesting crowd. (Great, let’s hope this crowd doesn’t sit on it’s hands like the ones in Cleveland.)

8:26 PM EST – Jack swagger beat jason jones. Dominated him grappling. jones showed decent fire on two hope spots, swagger won with his finish. Lots of boos. (Swagger really should get a name for his gut wrench power bomb.)

8:44 PM EST – Evan and primo beat carlito and chavo in a good ten minute match for superstars. Great reaction for evan, afew cheers for carlito. Rate battery, no show. (The last comment was his answer to us doing a short live show afterwards. I have no fucking idea what a rate battery is though. Let me go to bed on time at least.)

8:56 PM EST – Gail kim over katie lea. Not bad at all. Katie worked an arm and gail sold it like two pros (and unlike most guys). (That’s not too big of a shock to me. I could gripe about the WWE using their women wrong but it’d be as useful slamming my head against a brick wall.)

Raw granny

This granny likes it RAW~!

Kevin is texting us updates from the Nationwide Arena (Nationwide is on your side) in Columbus, Ohio (the University of Iowa is on my side). Here they are, in a timely fashion (with my asshole comments in italics):

7:33 p.m.: They have to top (tarp?) half of the arena behind the hard camera. The areas open are packed. Superstars match is the Bella Twins vs. Katie Lea & Jillian. (Godspeed, Kevin.) The Bellas win with a victory roll. The Bellas didn’t look bad until after the hot tag. Decent match. Katie got the most cat calls. Guards have passed out some DX glow sticks.

7:44 p.m.: Chavo vs. Primo vs. Masters for a spot in the Rumble. Chavo is locked for a Masters win. Too bad the crowd lost. (Ba-dum ching.) Masters got an OK reaction. Looks like a SS match. (I hope he’s not referring to the SS like the tattoo on Ludvig Borga’s leg.)

7:52 p.m.: Jericho came out and said he’d win the RR. Truth came out to a big pop (sad) and ran down Y2J. Truth claims he’ll win the RR (that’ll be the fuckin’ day). Short brawl & Jericho bails.
